Cooking is fun. Eating is funner. I cook, photograph and write these recipes. Everything I post on this blog I make from scratch using fresh wholesome ingredients.. I've been cooking since I was a little kid. My recipes are based on trial and error, along with studying cookbooks, family recipes, blogs and cooking shows. Some of the veggies and herbs I use are grown in my garden. Yay sustainability! I'm working on making my yard into an edible landscape. It's really fun to go out in the garden and pick your veggies for dinner!

Grilled Cheddar and Tomato on Sourdough

This was my delicious lunch, with a salad from the garden. It’s not a recipe so much as it is fresh tomato slices cooked into a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough. I like to serve mine the way my friend Grace does, with Dijon mustard. Yum!

Grilled Turkey, Arugula and Swiss w/  side of Giardiniera

I was in the garden harvesting lettuces and baby arugula when I thought how delicious spicy baby arugula would be tucked inside a grilled cheese with the honey turkey, Danish Havarti & crusty bakery bread I bought at the deli today. And it’s still Grilled Cheese Day. So here’s this one too. It was really yummy!

I’ll stop with the grilled cheese now.

Triple Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup Dip

It’s National Grilled Cheese Day! Hooray! I’m going to start a campaign to try to make National Grilled Cheese Day as big and popular as Thanksgiving & Christmas.

Pretty soon when you walk into shops around mid March all you’ll see are plush toys shaped like grilled cheese sandwiches, orange grilled cheese marshmallow Peeps, and St. Gruyere will climb down our chimneys and leave crusts of bread and cheddar wheels, if you’re good.

“Twas the night before Grilled Cheese Day and all through the house, everybody was excited about cheese, especially the mouse”. (My husband came up with that one. I can’t wait to renew our vows.) (I just read that aside to him and asked, “Should I take that part out? about renewing our vows?” and he said, “No, leave it in, Phyllis Diller.” Ha ha.)

I went to the Italian Deli to get good crusty bread for this sandwich, the kind that has the taste and texture of Europe. I used three kinds of cheese, white cheddar, Swiss and Havarti.

The creamy tomato soup was made simply by sautéing 1 chopped shallot in olive oil, add fresh chopped garlic, caramelize some of the juice from a large can of whole peeled tomatoes, then add the rest of the can, along with a cup or 2 of chicken or veggie stock. Blend with a stick blender and let it come to a simmer. Add a splash of cream or milk. Serve with perfect crusty grilled cheese. Yum!

I’m posting this because people don’t talk about it enough. Grilled cheese with a big slice of tomato in the middle. The tomato gets extra juicy and hot while the cheese melts. It’s easy and delicious. Spread the word.

I hope you can see this, I accidentally had my camera on a setting that made my sandwich look all sexy and mysterious.
